The Orioles welcomed one outfielder, Austin Hays, back from the injured list on Tuesday against the Marlins. But they quickly lost another.

Baltimore right fielder Anthony Santander exited the series opener in Miami early after appearing to roll his left ankle while diving back to the first base bag on an attempted pickoff in the first inning. Santander could not put any weight on the ankle, and had to be helped off the field. He was replaced by Hays, who scored on Maikel Franco’s ground out three batters later.

The Orioles used Rio Ruiz’s double to score two more first-inning runs off Nick Neidert, handing Matt Harvey an early 3-0 cushion. But overshadowing it was their concern for Santander, who hit .261 with 11 home runs, 32 RBIs and an .890 OPS to emerge as their top run producer in 2020. Santander is hitting .196 with two homers in 16 games this season.
